This past weekend, my husband and I ended up attending a different service than we…
Confessions of a Word Nerd
I love words. Big ones. Small ones. Obscure ones. But if feels like we’re getting lazy with our words these days. And some of the words and phrases currently in vogue are beginning to drive me a bit nuts. And so, I offer here, a short list of things I’d really rather never hear or read again.
- Delish.
Oh people. The word is delicious. It’s one teeny tiny extra syllable, but it takes it from crazy-making-horror to a beautiful word that makes my mouth water. Please, no matter what Rachael Ray says, please, just go ahead and finish off the world. Delicious. Say it with me. Delicious.
- Crack.
As in “crack bread” or “crack candy” or whatever else you want to say is so amazingly delicious that you won’t be able to stop eating it. Okay, I get it, it’s awesome. But can we just call it tasty? Addictive? I can’t make a recipe for something named after a drug that claimed so many lives. I just can’t.
- Dump.
In the same vein of crack, this is all those “dump cakes” or “dump casserole” recipes. I get it, you toss all the ingredients together and mix it up and it’s super easy…but dump? First off, I have boys, so dump inevitably leads to thoughts of needing a bottom wiped. And even if it didn’t, where does garbage get taken? That’s right, to the dump. (I’m afraid I’m just not PC enough to change to calling it the landfill. It’s the dump.) And I don’t want cake that’s associated with either of those things.
Do you have a word (or two) that are giving you fits these days?

Dude! Girls calling other girls dude! Are you kidding me? It drives me insane!
Oh, and what about retarded? “That cake was retardedly good!” I don’t get the connection. First of all, I despise that word, and am wondering if I should even be typing it, but it is a slang that young people in my neck of the woods use. There are so many other slang, or made up words floating around, it’s crazy!
And FYI, I totally share your feelings on the delish thing!
I don’t mind dude so much (probably because I’m guilty of it.) But the r word is a big no no.And I’ve never heard it used like you show-that’s odd. Either way though, we try to stay away from that one.
I read somewhere that the word Awesome should only be used to refer to God. I think that word is way over used these days.
I probably overuse awesome, I blame that fully on being a child of the ’80s. But I try to rein it in some.
