A New Must-Read

thingsunseenI’m not one who usually goes on and on about books – even ones I adore – and says you must read them. I’ll recommend them, certainly. I’ll tell you they’re good. But for me to want to rave, the book has to be incredibly special. Things Unseen is such a book.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m a fan of just about any genre out there, but if you ask me which books have stuck with me the longest or that I tend to return to as re-reads throughout the years, they’re likely to be fantasy or sci-fi. So perhaps there’s a bit of a bias playing into that with this next statement: You owe it to yourself to go purchase and read this book.

C.J. Brightley has taken the Fae (think: Fairies, Fair Folk, etc.) and made them something wholly different yet wholly familiar (honestly I thought Elves most of the way through, as for me, often, that’s where I go when I see Fae, but I know that’s not always the case.) She then put them into a dystopian near-future that’s realistic enough to have you checking over your shoulder when you’re crossing the street. What results is an incredibly believable story that you won’t want to put down.

If you enjoy traditional fantasy (e.g. Tolkien), dystopian reads (e.g. Steelheart by Sanderson or even the over-hyped Hunger Games or Divergent series (I loved Divergent, thought Insurgent was meh, have no real pressing urge to finish the series)), or more speculative sci-fi type reads, I’m fairly confident that you’ll enjoy this one as well.

And now you’re set with your weekend reading. I’ll be busy tapping my fingers and waiting for book 2 in the series.
