For a little while now, I've been trying to up my game when it comes…
A Year in Books – The Runners Up
Since choosing just one favorite book for the year proved so difficult for me that I went with a tie, I thought I’d list a few of the others that were certainly notable and definitely worth a read. Christian Fiction is noted with an asterisk. Thus, without further ado, the Honorable Mention List (in no particular order):
- Always the Wedding Planner, Never the Bride (but read the first books in the series first!)*
- Ender’s Game (I read this first in the 8th grade and have revisited it many times. It’s such excellent SciFi!)
- Never Tell (This was the first Ellie Hatcher novel I read and I like the tough, but conflicted detective.)
- The Ninth District (Really well written thriller.)
- The Chase (Excellent romantic suspense from DiAnn Mills.)*
- Fearless (A gripping non-fiction story.)*
- The Wretched of Muirwood (Not Christian, but has a good faith allegory developing. YA)
- One More Book Before I Die (A novella, really, but very well done and a fast, entertaining read.)*
- Pandora’s Grave (Great thriller.)*
- Harriet Beamer Takes the Bus (Fun, light, and delightful.)*
- The Oldest Enemy (Another fantastic thriller with Peretti-like overtones.)*
- Love Simplified (Delightful romance/romantic comedy.)*
- Craving the World (Fun, thought-provoking YA.)*
- Freehome (Excellent sci fi — fans of Firefly, in particular, will love this.)*
Have you read any of these? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Well, I’ve read at least one of these! 😉 (Thanks for the mention.) But yes, I really enjoyed Ender’s Game and read most of the sequels, but it was the most gripping. I’ll have to revisit it before the movie comes out.
Now I like thrillers, and I see The Ninth District is a debut novel, self-published. Think I’d like it? Thanks for all the suggestions!
Of the sequels to Ender’s Game, I like the more recent ones the best. The absolute must-read sequel (IMO, of course), if you’ve not yet, is Ender in Exile. It picks up right after Ender’s Game ends, but is a more recent novel, spans the time between Ender’s Game and the original sequel.
Yeah, I think you’d probably enjoy the Ninth District. It’s a fast read, but I remember enjoying it. It’s not a super thriller, but it’s got some good action.
I did read Ender in Exile and remember it was good. I’ll check out Vince Flynn as well. Thanks!
