For a little while now, I've been trying to up my game when it comes…
Book Review: Cloak of the Light by Chuck Black
I’ll admit up front, I love Chuck Black’s books. I have most of them (though looking in the back I saw a few I don’t have – plan to remedy that soon) and am anxiously awaiting the day I can read them with my boys – or just set the boys loose on them.
Cloak of the Light is no exception to my enjoyment of his work. In fact, I’d venture to say this is my favorite yet. Drew is a young man who has seen more than his share of tragedy in his life. As a result and influenced by his friend, he turns to science for all of life’s explanations, turning firmly away from any acknowledgement of God’s existence, let alone love. Then an accident leaves him blind.
Despite the doctors’ belief that the blindness is permanent, Drew regains his sight – along with an odd ability to see what he perceives as alien invaders from another dimension. Drew determines to do what he can to fight the evil invaders – regardless of the cost to himself.
I appreciated the fact that Black allowed Drew to remain antagonistic to the Gospel throughout the entire novel. Though he’s softening, Drew doesn’t have a “magical conversion” that makes everything make sense and be perfect as is all too often the case in books where Angles and Demons are involved in a fight over a particular person. The novel itself harkens back to Peretti while still holding a completely unique take on the spiritual fight on earth.
I’ll be anxiously counting down the days until book 2 is released.
(I received this book from the publisher for the purpose of review, but all opinions are my own. If I hadn’t enjoyed it, I would’ve said so.)

How many books has this author written? Are they all YA?
There are 9 so far (2 series). Yep, all YA – but they’re great for boys (very strong boy main characters – they have girls, too, but they’re definitely boy-friendly. I think of him somewhat like a Christian Percy Jackson type writer.)
