Book Review: The Oldest Enemy

If Frank Peretti and Joel C. Rosenberg got together to write a book, I suspect they’d end up with something a lot like The Oldest Enemy by Michael J. Webb. This book mixes a believable end of Israel scenario (not quite end times, but definitely along those lines) with supernatural elements that are realistic enough to make you keep the light on. (And they never cross into hokey, which sometimes can happen with the supernatural elements, I’ve found.)

In The Oldest Enemy, we meet David Lighthouse, an assistant pastor in Florida who is looking into the death of one of his parishioners. His investigation has him crossing paths with a varied cast, all who bring something new and interesting to the table as they work together to solve the murder and end up trying to finish a spiritual battle started in Hitler’s Germany.

What I loved the most about this book were the characters. Everyone, even the seemingly throw-away ones, were richly drawn and lifelike. And most of them have a little hidden twist that, when revealed, takes the story down a completely unexpected path. I also enjoyed the way things that were mentioned only briefly at the start were neatly woven in at the end to make the whole thing come together.

If you enjoy thrillers, this should definitely make your to be read pile. Soon.
