Christmas Letters – yea or nay?

Every year, my Facebook friends seem to get into a discussion about Christmas letters. I’ll admit, the first time this happened it took my by surprise. I mean, really, there are camps when it comes to this? (The other issue that had me in shock are the over vs. under people when it comes to toilet paper. Frankly, as long as there IS toilet paper, I’m good. I really don’t care how it hangs on the dispenser.)

Back to Christmas letters. Yes, there are camps. There are the, “Oh, I love newsy letters and finding out all about your life!” people (I’m one of those, personally) and there are the “Ugh, your letter is just an excuse for you to brag and try to make me feel bad” people. (And I have to say, as one who loves and sends Christmas letters, I don’t get why people in the second camp feel that way. It’s certainly never the intention I write my letter with. Am I just nosy?) You don’t find many people who are neutral about Christmas letters.

On the other hand, there are the card camps, too. There are the people who just send a photo card with no words. Just make up a photo card and stick it in an envelope and call it done. I’ll admit…those disappoint me. I want to know how you are! (Now, put the photo card in with a letter and I’m on cloud nine.) And there are the send a card–but not a photo card–with a brief personal note people.

And then there are the “just change my status on Facebook to Merry Christmas and call it a day” people. πŸ™‚

So tell me, where do you fall when it comes to Christmas communication?

  1. I actually like the Christmas cards that are pictures. I’ve never actually sent one, but I like it when I get those from other people. In terms of the Christmas letters, I never have time to read them. That’s my problem. It’s not that I mind hearing about other peoples’ lives and accomplishments.

    1. I don’t mind the pictures…I just want more than that – sign them or something? For all they’re a picture, when it’s just that as is in the envelope, it’s impersonal.

  2. I love pictures and letters and for years sent them both to around 100 people. When stamps got so expensive and the fuss and complaining of my kids taking pics, I started choosing my battles and gave up. Though, I miss them! Lol! Maybe it is time again this year, but maybe just a few less to mail?!?! πŸ™‚

  3. I love getting Christmas letters, but I never sent one. We used to buy fancy cards, but I send very few now. I can’t afford it. I do give (cheap) cards to friends, but I don’t include pics. I gave my kids a pic of me several years ago, and they declared that was totally narcissistic of me, so I wouldn’t dare give one to anyone else.

  4. Who can send anything these days with postage so expensive? I’m unemployed because of health issues this year. I had a “friend” that always sent Christmas letters and hers were to make her life you better than it really was. I groaned every year when hers came. I have another friend that sends me a valentine each year with photos and a letter. I enjoy hers. And I do like the family picture cards. After Christmas I cut the greeting off and save the photo.

  5. I totally enjoy getting Christmas cards, but I rarely manage my time well enough to send them. Maybe this year since I am not working … I like getting Christmas letters, but don’t send them. I pretty much keep up to date with the people I want to know the details of my life. We’re all right here in FB!
