How Was Your Easter?

We had a pleasant day yesterday with all the extended family gathered for our Easter meal. My menu was…okay. Family said they enjoyed it, but I felt it was all rather lackluster. Still, it was pleasant to spend time putting together a big meal for everyone again rather than just phoning it in with a Honey Baked Ham and mashed potatoes. (Which is not to say that if you did that and enjoyed it there’s anything wrong with doing so. We’ve just been doing it a lot lately and I missed cooking something more adventurous.)

My picky boys both liked the pierogies. And that’s about it. They did at least try everything else. (Well, I didn’t make them try the lamb. I didn’t even try the lamb. I just can’t eat lamb. It makes me sad. Little fluffy lambs.)

We didn’t end up going to church and that, also, made me sad. But the way our church does things simply doesn’t work if you have young kids. They meet at a high school (instead of our lovely building) so they can cut down from 4 services to 2. And if you can look past how uncomfortable the auditorium is and how loud it inevitably is (the acoustics are seriously bad for a high school auditorium), then it’s fine…if you don’t have kids between 3 and 5. See, at our church, kids can only go to one Sunday school starting in Kindergarten. And I love that – it’s good to teach your kids to be in church and in Kindergarten, they’re old enough to do that. But at Easter, the space for childcare is limited since we’re not in our building and so at 3 they kick you out of nursery for the service.

There is a HUGE difference between a 3 year old and a Kindergartner.

Last year we tried it. My then three year old made it maybe five minutes. I spent the rest of the time trying to keep him from destroying the high school while we waited for the service to end. Just thinking about it this year was giving me anxiety and insomnia, so on Thursday I asked if we could skip. Hubby, thankfully, remembered the nightmare, so was fine with that. But…it still makes me sad. It feels incredibly wrong to to miss church on Easter of all days.

Anyway, we did a little Easter service at home, which was nice. But it wasn’t the same. Hopefully next year the littlest will be able to handle it and we can go back.

  1. My Easter weekend was amazing! First of all, my son was baptized on Saturday night! 🙂 I am still smiling over it, and it’s Tuesday! On Sunday my daughter and granddaughters joined us for church, and we had 2 different dinners afterwards. I didn’t have to cook at all! 🙂 On top of all that, the weather was absolutely beautiful, sunny and in the 70’s! 🙂
