I Probably Read Too Much

I just sat down and added my latest batch of books to the list I keep each year of what I read. I’ve read 110 books so far this year. And while there aren’t that many days left in the year, I’ll probably manage at least one or two more before all is said and done. The number is down quite a bit from last year (I read 150 last year) – but I did re-read the Harry Potter series and some of them are the size of 2 or 3 books (I guess I could track how many pages I read, but that seems…a little overboard.) Plus I wrote two books of my own – can’t discount that. (And writing takes up time that I would probably manage to sneak a few pages of reading in otherwise.)

Looking over the list, if I had to choose just one favorite from the year, it’d probably be a tie between The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley and Divergent by Veronica Roth. (Yes, I realize I totally defeated the purpose of choosing just one with the whole tie idea, but I can’t help myself.) They’re utterly different books. Neither are Christian fiction, but I can’t, off the top of my head, remember anything particularly objectionable in either one, and I’d recommend both to people who like to read a variety of genres. (I specify that simply because some people only read X genre. And if that’s you, that’s great – if a book doesn’t fall into whatever genre X is for you, then it’s likely you’re going to dislike it on some level simply because it’s not what you like to read.) (I, myself, read pretty much every genre save for horror (I get nightmares entirely too easily for that) and things that cross the line in the bedroom if you’ll follow me.)

What’s your favorite (or top two) that you read this year?

  1. Although I enjoyed “Divergent” I liked “Delirium” better. My other top two book is “Finally and Forever” because it was the much anticipated finale to Robin Jones Gunn’s Katie Wheldon series …

    1. Hmm, I haven’t read Delirium. I’ll have to look it up. I probably have a list of “also rans” that I’m going to post on Friday — cause even limiting the tie to 2 was hard. It was a pretty good year as far as reading goes.

  2. So excited for your new release and so proud of you! It’s about time a publisher recognized the value in what you write. :o) Best book ever– Little Women. I try to read it every year, and each time something new sticks out to me. My Mom gave me the copy she received as a little girl and I’m hoping to read it to my kids in a few years. Finally got to read The Lost Symbol, which was like eating saltines with cheese whiz, but I felt like I was catching up with my generation and at least I didn’t say “may I have the last few hours of my life back?” after reading it. I’ll have to check out your suggestions, always looking for something of value.

    1. Katy! (I know, I know, Kate – but I just…can’t. I try, I really do!)

      Thanks. 🙂

Little Women is definitely a classic worth revisiting, though I’m more of an Anne of Green Gables girl. Still, totally cool to have the copy your mom had as a girl – precious family treasure!

  3. I’m going to work my way through a few more YA dystopian/urban fantasies this year – starting with Divergent as well as Matched. I tried The Maze Runner and didn’t get into it, so won’t finish that series.

I’ll also catch up on my John Grisham novels (having read almost all of his books!) and other thrillers. Read my first Michael Connelly, The Reversal, and wasn’t impressed. I’m reading my first Brad Thor novel, Full Black, and am enjoying it. Also read my first Dean Koontz novel, The Good Guy, and really liked it. I’d recommend J. Mark Bertrand’s police procedural crime thrillers featuring Detective Roland March – Back on Murder, Pattern of Wounds, and Nothing to Hide.

    1. I want to read Matched as well as City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments series). I’ve heard mixed reviews on The Maze Runner but will probably still give it a try.

I enjoyed Back on Murder, and the others in that series are on my list, haven’t gotten to them yet. Love Brad Thor, but actually think Vince Flynn is ever so slightly better.

You’d probably enjoy the Wretched of Muirwood.
