Mother’s Day is Near

I’ll admit it, I’m not a big fan of Mother’s Day. I never really have been. See, my mom’s birthday very often falls on Mother’s Day (if not the actual day, a day or two on either side) and, as such, there was always the issue of what the gift or card we got her was for. Was it for her birthday or mother’s day? Could it do double duty? (Generally a resounding no was the answer for that last one.)

Then, as I got older and infertility reared its ugly head, Mother’s Day was just another day when salt got rubbed in the wound. Every mother was asked to stand in church. Often there are baby dedications that day as well. The TV and stores are full of the wonderment of motherhood. Frankly, it’s horrific – along the lines, I imagine, as being single on Valentine’s Day. (Though generally speaking, even single people have at one time or another dated someone, so while they might not have a Valentine for a particular year, they at least know what it’s like. The infertile have a mother, sure, but it’s not quite the same.)

Now that I have kids, I have to say, I’m still not a big fan. Because I want to be recognized and loved every day of the year. Not just one arbitrary one in May. (And to be clear, I am loved and appreciated just about every day, so it’s not as if that’s something lacking in my life.) I simply don’t see the point in Mother’s Day. Which I guess is nice cause it’s lets the people in my world off the hook.

Either way, Mother’s Day is on the way – so if you have or are a mom who cares, make sure you’re ready. And then, flip ahead a few weeks in your calendar and make a note to call your mom and remind her that you love her. Just because.
