For a little while now, I've been trying to up my game when it comes…
Movie Quotes in Daily Life
It may just be my family, but I’ve noticed lately how frequently movie quotes crop up in my day-to-day conversations. It’s not a new trend in my family by any stretch of the imagination. The first one I recall was begun by my mother shortly after seeing High Road to China (classic Tom Selleck cheese if you’ve not seen it), the quote? “Speeeeeaaaakkkkk.”
My sister and I often have entire conversations that consist of nothing but movie quotes. For whatever reason, these tend to be Meg Ryan movies. (We do a lot of “Tweaking. T-w-e-a-k-i-n-g.”) And I inevitably end up telling my sister, “You’re right, you’re right. I know you’re right.”
My husband and I frequently have multiple Monty Python and Princess Bride quotes crop up in a given conversation. When talking about the boys, it’s most often a tongue-in-cheek comment that someone’s being repressed.
And on and on it goes.
Do you do this? Would it be incredibly weird if characters in a book did this? (Side question: would it even be legal to have characters in a book quote a movie? You probably have to get permission…and I don’t know that anyone could really afford that. I’ll have to investigate.)
Bonus question: Can you name the movies?

The characters in my novel “Craving the World” quoted Forrest Gump, The Simpsons and Monty Pythons Holy Grail…to name a few. It was my way of adding inside jokes that I knew my sisters would get (and hopefully make the readers chuckle). As for the legality of it…that’s one reason I self published! 😉
