Snow Fun

This weekend, we were participants in snowstorm Jonas, along with most of the rest of the East coast. All Friday, the boys were bouncing around asking when the snow was going to start. When it finally did, they danced from one window to the other watching it come down. There was hardly any on the grass when they first started begging to go play in it. I managed to hold them off until we had a couple of inches (which didn’t actually take that long.)

Saturday we did a little shoveling in the morning. (We woke up to a good 18 inches of snow and it was still pouring from the skies.) Last year, they had an electric snowblower on sale for $99. I’d been talking to hubs for several years about getting such an item and he would grumble about gas/oil mixture engines and storage and so forth. This one is small, folds up nice and compact, and is electric. Toss in not crazily expensive and he said find. That little thing is awesome. It’s not something that people who get tons of snow every year would benefit from, but for the one or two storms we get a year (and even then, it’s not usually this much snow) it’s plenty. Since I knew we were slated for around 30 inches of snow (and that seems like a pretty reliable number from the places we measured) I figured it’d be good to do a pass on Saturday, cause there was no way our little guy was going to handle the full amount.

Sunday, since everything was cancelled, we did more clearing in the morning so it could get the full effect of the nice sunny day and, hopefully, melt down to actual pavement before nightfall.

They’ve already cancelled schools in the area for Monday and Tuesday. My public school mom friends are crying on Facebook about having their kids home for six days in a row. Me and my homeschool mom friends are just kind of rolling our eyes. School will continue, as usual, for us.

But I’m loving the blanket of snow and the diamond-like reflections of sun and that general feeling of quiet that a good snow brings. And, as a bonus, it finally feels like winter.

  1. Glad your boys enjoyed the snow. In SW Michigan the last few winters we received a total of ten feet of snow. Not only were those winters extremely snowy, they were frigid. I can never remember Lake Michigan being 90% frozen. Both winters we had a total of 7 snow days (normally we have 2 or 3). So far this winter we only had about 10 inches of snow and one snow day, because of blowing snow and frigid temps. The Lake near the shore has ice balls or ice pancakes. Enjoy your time. As a retired teacher, my grandson would love to be homeschooled. I can tell him, he would not have a snow day. LOL After my father had a stroke, we purchased a small electric snow blower for him. They are fun to use. Enjoy. Best wishes.

    1. To be fair, we don’t have a snow day, but we do get every Friday off. And school only takes two hours on a long day. So…there are still perks. 🙂
