The Most Miserable Time of the Year

Will you indulge me if I whine just a little? Thanks!

This transition time between spring and summer is the time of year I dislike the most. I love spring. Love it! But summer and I are not friends. At least, not since we moved to the DC area. It gets hot. And it gets humid. And then we get smog and bad air quality days and I just want to curl up in a ball on top of an AC vent like my dog used to do and wait for winter. And it feels like we never have as much actual transition time as we should.

In a perfect world (perhaps this should be the missing verse to the song Camelot?) spring would gradually turn into summer. Maybe a 1 degree temperature increase each day. The humidity could also increase a little each day, though I’d be happy if we could figure out a way to get rid of humidity all together. So starting in mid-April, we’d be at about 60 degrees. Then, over the course of say two months, we’d be up to my absolute max of 95 (and honestly, could we just decree that it never gets above 80 anywhere, ever? That would rock.) It could hover in the 90-95 range for June and July – because let’s face it, there are people out there who like that and I guess they have as much right to heat as I do to cold. Then from August to mid-September, it would reverse by 1 degree a day until we were in the 50s and 60s for fall (October and November) at which point it could dip into winter temps for December, January and February with gradual warming starting up in March.

The key that you might be seeing though is nothing dramatic. Because what seems to inevitably happen around here is we’ll be in the low 60s/high 50s one weekend and then the next weekend it’ll be 95 with a million percent humidity. And you’ll make plans on the weekend thinking it might get into the 70s, but then find yourself sweltering in the heat that you have no idea where it came from and had zero time to acclimate. The acclimation is key.

What do you think? Do you have a least favorite season?

  1. I’m torn. I hate summer in Houston because it’s hot and humid. But, I work at a school, so I love having summers off. Winter is my favorite weather wise because it cools down for a few months although there have been many winters we’re wearing shorts.

    1. Laura, I’ve been to Houston in the summer once. Ugh! But the winters sound nice. 🙂

  2. I agree! Hot & humid weather can only be tolerated when I’m near a beach or a pool. Still, it makes fall – my favorite season – all the sweeter.
