Want Some Pie? Course Ya Do.

In case you’re not as nerdy as I am, and always have been, the title above is a riff on a scene from Return to Zork and is a phrase that gets frequently bandied about in these parts.

Anyway, as it turns out, yesterday I bopped over to Pinterest (something I don’t do very often because, well, it often results in cooking things I didn’t need to have in the house.) And this recipe for S’mores Pie caught my eye. S’mores? Oh yeah. Pie? Oh yeah. S’mores AND pie? Sign me up!

So I bopped upstairs to see if, in fact, I had all the various things needed to make said pie and – hooray! – I did. (Note: this is why I always keep baking chocolate on hand. Just in case I need to make a pie. Or something else chocolatey. And I did have to sacrifice one milk chocolate nutcracker from Christmas to round out the needed chocolate but…it was from Christmas. Probably good that it’s made into pie now.)

So the boys and I set about making pie. They mashed up the graham crackers for me and pressed it into the pie pan. I heated up the half and half (cause I didn’t have heavy cream – worked fine) and melted the chocolate and then…the crust had to cool. That was a little disappointing and is a reason I always *say* I’m going to read the whole recipe before I start when I try something new and then, inevitably, forget.

No matter, tucked the baked crust in the fridge to cool (after it had cooled some on the stovetop, of course) and watched a little TV with the boys.

After a bit, bing bang boom. One pie. Except that, for as much as I love cooking, I’ve never felt the need to buy a kitchen torch. I mean, sure, they’re cool. And it’s fun to say, “Why yes, of course I have a kitchen torch. Don’t you?” But I just don’t run into a need for such a tool often enough to excuse it. Besides, I have a utility lighter. (Note for non-pretentious cooks: the above linked works just as well for toasting the tops of things.)

And then there was pie. And it was good.
