When Did You Last Ice Skate?

ice-skating-152578_1280My eldest son started asking about ice skating sometime during the summer. I’m not sure exactly when. But, regardless, there was a day when it worked out for my hubby to take him to open skate, just the two of them. They had fun, but my son commented on how challenging it was.

For a while, that was all we heard on the matter. And then it started coming up again. So I asked him if he’d like to try lessons and learn how (rather than mom or dad trying to dredge up their vague memories of how not to fall over. Or at least, how to get back up.) The local ice rink has group lessons that are reasonably affordable, and he was game, so I signed him up. It’s been a lot of fun.

Last week, we decided to stay for the open skate that is directly after his lesson. It’s included in his lesson cost, so it’s reasonable to give him that extra practice time. And my younger boy, watching his older brother skate, has been curious. So, after the lesson, I strapped skates on me and the three year old and the three of us spent a little over an hour making three circuits of the rink. Everyone had a ball–I suspect the littlest is going to want lessons himself when he’s old enough.

I don’t think I’d been skating since middle school – I have a vague memory of going with the youth group once. It’s not as if I was ever a proficient. But I find myself thinking it might just be something we can all do together more often. Have you been skating lately?
