Why Yes, I *Am* a Clutz.

crutchesSo my Sunday afternoon was progressing along the way it usually does. I’d gone home from church, fixed lunch for the family, printed out all the check-in papers for Awana, and gone off back to church to start setting up the rooms for club when I wandered into the Fellowship Hall to start setting up for opening ceremony.

Our games director usually rolls out our super awesome game mat, but he was out of town today, so I figured I’d handle it for the assistant (who is never on time). Now, the mat is a pain, I’ll admit it. But I spent most of last year unrolling it and really – it’s not that hard. So step one was to move the flags out of the way.

Well, the flags sit on an 8″ platform. So I stepped up, grabbed a flag and it’s base and then the plan was to step off and carry the flag off to the corner so it was out of the way for mat unrolling. What ended up happening was me mis-judging where the end of the platform was and stepping completely wrong, hearing some not-normal noises from the general direction of my right foot and ankle, and then me biting my lip in pain with the only prayer I could manage being “Oh, Jesus, help.” Over and over and over. (And no, I really wasn’t using His name in vain. I was praying. I promise.)

The throbbing abated, somewhat, so I hobbled about getting the rest of the rooms ready (but I decided they could deal with the mat on their own cause yeah, down a leg it really wasn’t going to happen) and called my hubby to bring an Ace bandage along with the boys when he came. He did. I managed to make it through club and drive home, but by the time I got to the couch I was ready to curl up in a ball and just sob for a few hours.

So I called my sister and she took me to the ER. (Because of course the urgent care that I know has an x-ray machine closes at 4 on Sunday.) Thankfully there was no wait and, just an hour and a half later, I was back home with a diagnosis of a bad sprain, a new Ace bandage and a cool splint thingy that really makes it feel so much better. Plus a milkshake. My sister says that X-rays demand ice cream. I wasn’t going to argue.

And so, rather than getting home and writing (and maybe actually making my deadline), I instead got to visit the hospital. Fun times. Fun times.

I’m glad it’s not broken. But crutches and I are not friends (though I do injure this ankle enough that I actually own a set of crutches already so…up side. Right?) so the new hope is that I can hobble around well enough to get my foot/ankle healed without falling and injuring something else.

I’d say the odds are pretty evenly split.

  1. OHHHHHHHH NOOOOOO!!!!! prayers for quick healing!!! I have fallen [technically knocked down by the dog] twice in the past two weeks – thankfully no sprains er nuthin, “just” bruises and a swollen knee!! so, down time, perhaps that means more focused writing time???

    1. Yikes, glad you’re not badly hurt, but swollen knee sounds like no fun! Appreciate the prayers – been on it too much already today, but am hopeful that the glorious thing that is nap/quiet time will give me some rest with my elevated foot and laptop. 🙂
