Sometimes Social Media Makes Me Tired

Facebook, in particular.

Not for interacting with readers, mind you. I love hanging out on my author page, or in the Inspired Inkpot (have you joined yet? It’s a great little place to help promote four lovely authors.) But on my personal account, I get tired of seeing folks posting about the great time they had with such and such a person when you know that not long ago, the friends who would’ve been included on that post would have been you except for a big misunderstanding that the people who were hurt didn’t bother to try and straighten out until so much time had gone by that…yeah.

Facebook can be like middle school sometimes.

I hated middle school.

Harmony Harkema wrote a great post the other day about authentic online community. I think, sometimes, relationships online–even those that exist offline as well–are fraught with comments designed to make someone else feel left out, or less important, or …whatever.

It makes me tired.

I want to just shake my friends sometime and ask, “Why would you post that? Just enjoy that you have your BFF (and don’t get me started on the whole BFF idea–nothing like making one friend better than all your other friends) and keep it between yourselves. There’s no need to go out of your way to make sure your other friends know they’ve been left out.

But that’s just me. And I already told you, I’m tired.

  1. I ignore those type of posts that you mentioned but I understand what you are saying. What about those that post pictures of what they cooked for dinner or what they ordered when they ate at a fancy expensive restaurant. I want to comment “get a life already!”
And do folks not realize when they post current pictures of their vacations, it leaves them wide open. “Hey, I’m not home, I’m on vacation, come and rob my house, no ones home.”

    1. I don’t mind food so much, but the vacation ones do make me scratch my head. I have a neighbor who does that, and when I asked he said they always have a house sitter. So…I’m hopeful others are being smart, too.
