For a little while now, I've been trying to up my game when it comes…
What I’ve Been Reading Lately
I haven’t done a reading update for about a month and there have been some good books coming across my desk lately. Not all are romance (so if you’re a die hard, I only read romance, kind of person, some of these won’t be for you, but if you’re omnigenrevous like me, I heartily recommend each of these.)
First, some old favorites that I re-read. I think we’ve talked about the fact that I love to re-read books. It’s like sitting down with a long-time friend and chatting. It’s warm and cozy and not stressful because you know what you’re going to get, and it’s always worthwhile. So, since that’s absolutely what I was craving in March, I settled in with:
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. If you haven’t read this, you’re missing out. I love the letter format — I think that’s part of what makes it so friendly. Because really, what’s better than long, newsy letters from a friend?
Then, because that letter format friendly thing sat so well with me, I dug out my copies of 84 Charing Cross Road and Q’s Legacy. There’s really nothing like a visit with Helene Hanff. I understand completely why so many people wrote her fan mail when she was alive and I only regret that I didn’t know her books yet before she passed. Because I absolutely would have done the same. And, in an utter and absolute rarity of happenstance, the movie of 84 Charing Cross Road is fantastic and very nearly word-for-word. Plus it has Anthony Hopkins in it. And really, it’s hard to go wrong with him.
Those were enough comfort reading (like comfort food, but with books instead), so I ventured back onto my Kindle to see what was waiting for me and I discovered the delightful Spring at the Barncastle.
And then, I rounded things out with The Shock of Night — book one in what is promising to be an amazingly fantastic new fantasy series by Patrick Carr.
What have you read lately that you’ve enjoyed?
