For a little while now, I've been trying to up my game when it comes…
Are You a TV Watcher?
I’ll admit it, I used to love watching TV. I say used to because over the last two years, the time spent in front of the tube has been eeking away in favor of writing. Plus, well, the elder of my two boys started paying more attention to the shows we were watching, which in turn had me paying more attention to them…and they were really inappropriate for him to be seeing. So, when you’re not able to watch the shows you want to see until the kiddos are in bed and the hubby doesn’t like the same shows you do and wants to use the TV to play Xbox, the TV watching takes a hit.
I’ll confess that I missed it for a month or two. Jonesing, I guess, like an addict. But as I got out of the habit, I missed it less and less, to the point that last spring we ended up cancelling our satellite and switching over to Netflix and Amazon Prime streaming and Hulu.
We never use Hulu. I’m cancelling that here shortly (I have it on hold for now just to be sure that we really aren’t using it but…don’t miss it!)
Obviously we still watch some stuff (thus Netflix and Prime) but honestly? It’s mostly kid shows and movies with the family. And I love that I’m no longer tempted to sit and watch something that I know my kids probably shouldn’t see (and to be clear, it’s something like Big Bang Theory or Elementary or Person of Interest. Nothing seriously horrid, but enough innuendo, language, or violence that they just don’t need to be exposed to it) just to relax for a bit. All things considered, it’s kind of nice. (Though I somewhat miss being in the loop, on those three shows in particular.)
What about you? Are you a TV watcher? What’s your favorite show?

I love to watch TV. HGTV, the Food Network, Lifetime Movie Network, and a few reality tv shows and dramas on Primetime.
The HGTV and Food Network were two I thought I’d miss, but Netflix has a lot of my faves from them, so so far I’m doing ok. 🙂 I did love several reality shows (So You Think You Can Dance and the like but so far I’m not missing them too badly.)
When hubby and I got married (34 yrs ago), neither of us were big TV watchers and we needed so many other things, we agreed to put a television lower on the list. The longer we were away from it, the less we wanted to get one so we’ve gone without the whole time we’ve been married. We did have one for our kids to play games on when they were younger, but it was never hooked up for reception. I’m convinced it resulted in more family time, more conversation, and less attitude from our kids. I highly recommend it!
That’s so cool, Mary. I will say I’ve noticed the elder boy’s attitude improving some now that he has less options for TV (and consequently isn’t as interested in watching it.)
I used to be a BIG TV person. I had a special line up for every night of the week. Then a few years ago I started doing more reading, and now I could really care less about TV. 🙂 I looovvveee to read! When I do watch TV, it is usually The Walton’s or I Love Lucy or some good ol reruns of some old shows like those. Well I do admit that I do love The Duggars and sometimes a good Dr. Phil show. 🙂
I love re-runs of old shows. I have to say, that may be why I don’t mind just having Netflix and Amazon – all the oldies are there 🙂 But yeah, reading wins out for me most of the time!
I have to admit I love relaxing in front of the TV but I want to start spending more time reading this year.
